My name is Tom Niebuhr and I am the founder of InMemory.  In the summer of 2017, I left a corporate job in the financial services industry. Over the last 10 years, my job had entailed lots of business travel and an average of 65-70 hour weeks, taking me away from my family and creating an unhealthy work-life balance.

After taking a couple of months off, I began to think about what I should do in the next chapter of my life. In thinking about this, I had a couple of core requirements:

  • I wanted to create something new, and
  • I wanted to make a difference to everyday Canadians

With these requirements top of mind, I began my search by exploring business ideas which catered to seniors. Although I am 10 to 15 years shy of becoming a senior myself, I live close to an area of Vancouver which has a high percentage of seniors residents and seniors-focused businesses. Adding my financial background into the mix, I then focused my search on ways I could help seniors with the major financial decisions they need to make.

With my search now clearly focused, it didn’t take long for me to come across some articles on the high average cost of funerals in Canada as well as the fact that grieving families in Canada had little visibility on how different funeral homes charge for their services. This didn’t sit well with me and so, after a few short days, the idea for InMemory was firmly set.

Unfortunately, the idea was the easy part ... the much harder part was obtaining pricing details from the 650+ funeral service providers that we currently list on InMemory, and then deciding how best to present the pricing information to families consistently across Canada. We think we're pretty much there, but welcome your feedback on any ways we can make improvements.

Lastly, a few words on our core values ... which are very simply that we promise that all decisions made at InMemory, and all information contained in our website, will consistently put Canadian families first. And, if our business succeeds, we want Canadians in need to share in our success. For this reason, 15% of income earned by InMemory will be donated to registered charities.

It is my sincere hope that in some small way we at InMemory help ease some of the burden, uncertainty and stress associated with funeral planning, and saying goodbye to your loved one.
